Our efforts to strengthen a sustainable food system are essential in achieving the targets of the Farm to Fork Strategy - a project of the European Green Deal.

Research & Innovation
Plant biostimulants positively affect plant’s physiological functions - improving crop quality, nutrient use efficiency and resistance to abiotic stresses. It therefore forms a key
component in increasing crop productivity, but does so in a way that respects the planetary boundaries.
For this reason, in pursuit of preserving and restoring the health of our soils, Lima Europe’s Research & Development department is currently focused on biostimulants research. Morespecifically, we are carrying out experiments on plant growth promoting microorganisms
and bioactive compounds (such as plant extracts).

Literature
A thorough analysis of the relevant studies forms the foundation of the research process.
Evaluating previous research and theories enables us to understand possible gaps that exist in the research field and offers information and methods that could be relevant to the
project.
Laboratory
This type of experiment takes place in a well-controlled environment which allows the researcher to identify a cause-and-effect relationship. Here, hundreds of biological
compounds and microorganisms are being tested under different conditions.
Trials
In this stage the research is further fine-tuned. Plants grow under strict monitored conditions, no longer in a laboratory but rather in a greenhouse, to further assess the efficiency of our selected microorganisms and biological compounds.
The next step involves testing our products in a ‘real world’ environment: the researcher has limited control over the variables or the environment. This provides high levels of ecological validity.
Formulation & Production
After data collection and after the research findings are reviewed and reported, the product is formulated and produced.
The formulation helps to preserve the product over time and aims to ease its handling by
end-users. In this stage, many aspects are taken into consideration. Examples include: the
type of carrier material, the storage temperature and the cost of raw materials.
Registration
Registration is mandatory for every biostimulant product that is to be sold on the market. This ensures the effectiveness and safety of the product, which serves as proof that we provide high quality products to our customers.
GREENDEAL
One of the aims of the European Green Deal is to accelerate our transition to a more sustainable food system. It maps a new comprehensive strategy - the Farm to Fork Strategy - to ensure an environmentally friendly, healthy and inclusive food system. Lima Europe’s
research on biostimulants drives the objectives of the European Green Deal forward by addressing the problem at the source. Biostimulants are novel approaches that support the plant’s processes, and thus tackle the core problems by helping the plant reduce its need for
external agro-inputs (such as pesticides and fertilizers).
Lima Europe’s research on biostimulants helps farmers grow high quality crops profitably, while at the same time helping the EU transition to more sustainable practices. These environmental efforts are also central to achieving the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Sustainable agriculture lies at the core of the 2030 Agenda: 6 out of the 17 SDGs concentrate on sustainable agriculture. For instance, efforts to increase crop yield complement efforts to reach food security and improved nutrition (elements of goal 2).
